this vernal season

this vernal season

I took these pictures in the early days of spring, in places I pass through without thinking—roads, yards, edges of neighborhoods. Nothing unusual, nothing staged.

But the more I looked, the less certain those places felt. The camera has never confirmed what I see. It complicates it. Moments overlap. Light lingers longer than it should. Trees seem to hold more than one version of themselves at once.

This feels closer to how I experience things now—less fixed, less certain, shaped as much by memory as by what’s in front of me.

These images are instances of a day in a season, but they’re also about trying to hold onto something as it changes, and realizing that the act of trying to hold on is what transforms it.
