On a warm day in New York, sometime in the early 1970s, the people in these images were unaware that a small strip of film would be carrying a portrait of their lives into a future they could not imagine. People aged. People died. Lives took trajectories that could never have been imagined. Watching the film then was a completely different experience than watching it today.
It is often said that pictures are moments frozen in time but there’s nothing static about this. These images have already passed through several layers of time: the original experience, the film, the decades of physical deterioration, digitization, and now my own process of extracting and editing these frames. Fifty years later, the film has changed. Colors have drifted. Light has overtaken faces. Bodies have become shadows, and shadows have become color. What was once an attempt to preserve a moment now reveals how futile preservation can be..
Memory does not remain still. It deteriorates, transforms, and occasionally returns to us in fragments. A face. A gesture. The shape of someone standing in sunlight. A city glimpsed through the unstable surface of time.
new york, the first volume in the series old movies, is a meditation on those fragments: the fragile memories of the people we were, the people we became, and all that has disappeared.
