at the leper's ball
at the leper’s ball is assembled from fragments of deteriorating Super 8 film documenting a costume party populated by young adults still in the process of becoming. Beneath dim lights and behind improvised disguises, the party becomes a space of temporary permission — a brief suspension of expectation where identities can be exchanged, exaggerated, hidden, or invented altogether.
The damaged film stock transforms these moments into something dreamlike. Faces dissolve into masks, gestures blur into performance, and the boundary between sincerity and theater begins to disappear. What survives is evidence of uncertainty: the lightness of inhabiting, for one night, the possibility of being someone or something else.
As the emulsion fades and fractures, the images drift further from documentation and closer to memory itself — unstable, haunted, affectionate, and incomplete.
